Scuba Diving Komodo Blog Entry Scuba diving in Komodo National Park has absolutely been the best scuba diving trip of my entire life. We dove some amazing locations such as Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Bay, Tatawa Besar, Tatawa Kecil, & Manta Point. They were absolutely amazing. We took a live-aboard with Maika Komodo Tours and the crew and diving guide were incredibly helpful and professional. I am hoping when we come back to Labuan Bajo next year we can also visit dive sites such as Gila Lawa Last, Dara Passage South, Dara Passage North, Batu Tiga, Tala, Sebayor Kecil, Sabolan, and Loh Sera. There are so many great places to explore we could not see them on this trip, but hopefully next time.
I think my 3 favorite places were Manta Point, Crystal Bay, and Batu Bolong. At Manta Point we saw about 10 manta rays that just swam all around us as if they were doing a dance to entertain us. It was a diving memory I will never forget. We drifted along the bottom for about 10 minutes on a very light drift dive and then we spotted two Manta Rays. Our instructor had us drop to the bottom and deflate our BC’s enough so we could just stay on the bottom and watch the Mantas go above our heads. After about 5 minutes, there must have been at least 10 manta rays. There were so many I lost count. Two of the even swam above my head and I could have easily touched them if I wanted to, but we are not supposed to touch them as that could cause them harm on the film on their skin. Our group was only 4 divers and I am pretty sure this was one of the best dives all of them had ever. A memory I will not forget anytime soon. I can wait to do it again! Another favourite dive was Batu Bolong, which mean hole in the rock. This dive site is basically just a rock island in the strait between Komodo Island and Tatawa. Our instructor informed us that this was one of the most popular dive sites in the entire national park, and that we were very lucky we were the only boat there in the morning hours. Our Dive Instructor told us, that he thought it was one of the best dive sites in world, so he got our hopes up a bit after he told us that. Well, after diving there, I can say, he was right. This dive site was like an underwater aquarium. I could not believe all the different kinds of fish we were seeing. More fish than I have ever seen in my entire life on one dive trip. We stared at the top of Batu Bolang and follows our dive guide back and forth going left to right as to avoid the strong current on the sides of the gaint rock. We went down to about 25 meters and then slowed back up while going back and forth on the rock. We saw so many fish and aquatic wildlife such as; Reef Sharks, sweetlips, triggerfish, giant trevally, barracuda, clownfish, turtles, cuttlefish, I even saw an octopus and a long sea snake. I am so glad I finally got the change to dive Batu Bolong at least once while on our trip to Flores and Komodo!
I think my last favourite dive site was Crystal Bay. Some divers may say this can be a boring place after diving such amazing locations such as Batu Bolong or Manta Point, but I enjoyed it because the water was so clear and it was so relaxing. There is a reason it is called Crystal bay. The was was so clear, sometimes I actually felt like I was flying in the air because I could not even see the water. As a professional diver, this was the first time I have ever actually had the feeling of flying underwater. Another reason I enjoy is so much was because there were two turtles that we saw at the beginning of the dive and one of them seemed interested in us and stayed with us almost the entire dive. It was almost as he was entertaining us or just wanted to be friends for the day and hang us. This was the first time I had ever experienced something like that before.
