According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, BMKG, the earthquake occurred at approximately 04:58 WIB, with its epicenter approximately 30 km northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at a depth of approximately 15 km. Because of the earthquake's location and mechanism, BMKG issued a tsunami warning. Small tsunami waves were subsequently detected at several monitoring locations. At Labuan Bajo, BMKG recorded a tsunami height of approximately 0.36 meters. BMKG later officially announced that the tsunami threat had ended and terminated the tsunami warning. The earthquake caused serious impacts in other areas of Flores and East Nusa Tenggara, and recovery efforts remain ongoing in affected communities. We do not want to minimize those impacts. At the same time, it is important for travelers to understand that Flores is a very large island, and conditions have not been identical across every part of the island. Labuan Bajo and the offshore islands of Komodo National Park are in western Flores and the Komodo region.
