Adult Komodo dragons can usually weigh around (150lb) 70kg, although some can weigh much more. On average, a female adult weighs about 68km to 73km and measure about 2.29m (7.5ft). The male adult can weigh 79-91kg and measure around 2.59 meters (8.5ft). One of the largest ever measured was 3.04 meters (10ft) and the heaviest was a 81.5kg (180lb).
A Komodo dragon’s skin is extremely scaly. They are completely covered by tiny bones called osteoderms, which function as a sort of natural protection. The dragons have a tail as long as their body. In their months they have about 60 serrated teeth can be measured up to 2.5 cm in length. They have long, yellowish, forked tongued that can be seen if close up to a dragon.
The famous Komodo Dragon was first documented around 1910 by Europeans. They got widespread notoriety after 1912 when the director of Zoological Museum of Bogor in Java published a paper about the Dragons. The first two Komodo dragons to arrive in Europe were exhibited at the London Zoo at the Reptile house around 1927. The movie King Kong (1933) was inspired by the Komodo Dragons as well. There are also 3 specimens that are stuffed and on display in the American Museum of Natural History. Around 1950-60, the Dutch island administrations outlawed sport hunting and limited the number of dragon that could be taken for scientific research.
The Dragons prefer hot and dry areas and can be found around the beach, grassland, tropical forest, savanna, and mostly at low elevations. They are solitary creatures but they can be found coming together for eating and breeding. At first glance they can look like lazy and slow moving creature but they actually can run quite rabidly in brief sprints up to 20km/h (12 mph) and they can also dive down to 4.5 meters (15 ft). If you are on a Komodo Island Tour and do trekking, if you look closely, you may find some smaller Komodo dragons up in trees. They do this to stay out of reach of prey. The dragons like to hunt in the afternoon but considering their environment can be very hot, they are found in more shady areas during the hottest part of the day. If you take a Komodo Tour Package or Komodo Boat Tour, you may find that you see them right when you get off the boat. Sometime they enjoy staying close to the beach for hunting and to enjoy the cooling temperature from the wind. The Komodo find resting places which are also good places for attempting to ambush deer and wild boar. If you are tracking the locations of the Komodos, you can find these areas by looking for dropping and vegetation that has been cleared.
Komodo dragons are apex predators and truly dominate the areas in which they live in. They feed on animals such as birds, deer, invertebrates, and mammals. They have a venomous bite because there are two glands in the lower jaw they can secrete different toxic proteins. They have been a few reports of the creature acutely attacking humans. This is why it is imperative they you follow all the instructions from your Ranger when taking a Komodo Island Tour.
As far as Mating season, that happens between May and August. In September the Komodo lays their eggs in an abandoned nest or self dug netting hole, also known as a megapode. The incubations period for the eggs is about seven to eight months. It take about 8 to 9 years for a Komodo to become fully grown. We offer many different Komodo Tour Packages while visiting the National park. Is Komodo Good For Diving?
If are a scuba diver and know about Indonesian dive locations, that is a question that you would obviously want to know, if you don’t already. Komodo National Park is one of the most famous scuba diving areas in the world. It is known for its diverse aquatic life, strong currents, and manta rays. As some would say, it is a wild, rugged, and full of different adventures. Komodo National Park is one of Indonesia’s most famous diving destinations for travellers from all over the world. You can see Manta Rays, sharks, colourful reefs and and so many different aquatic life.
Two of the most popular Scuba Dive Spots in the Central of the Park. Manta Point and Batu Bolong. Scuba Diving Komodo is worth is for any diver visiting.
The most popular areas to dive are in the Central. Some would consider these the best areas as well, but they are the most visited because they are closer to Labuan Bajo then going to the North or South part of the park. Manta Alley, also goes by the name Manta Point, or Makassar Reef is an extremely popular dive location in Komodo National Park. This is because as it name says, a very popular place to spot Manta Rays. This is one of the largest scuba diving area in all of Komodo National Park. It is most a flat ares with a slight variation in sand mounts with bits of coral scattered sparingly throughout the entire area. The mantas enjoy swimming against the light current because it is good for feeding, as well there are meaning cleaning station in that area where the manta’s may stay for a time longer. These are great locations to relax on the sand bottom and hopefully get lucky and have at the manta rays swim all around you. The mantas can be seem all year round, but it is much less likely to see them during the dry season. If you want to see manta rays in Komodo National Park, the best months are usually November thru February.
Another extremely popular dive locations in the park is called Batu Bolong. In the local language this means “hole in the rock” Batu Bolong is a giant rock peak coming up from the ocean and as the name says, there is a big hole in the rock that create a small archway. This dive location is more for advanced divers because there can be some extreme current from a falling or rising tide. The location is in the central park of the park. On a rare occasion when there is no current you can dive all around the island, but that is very rare. Usually the is a current coming from the north and the place to dive on the south of the rock. Below the water line the Rock widens and you can go back and forth as you go up or down on the rock wall. By doing this, you can see a wide range of aquatic life. With this location, it is extremely important to follow the dive guide and stay behind them because on each side of the rock, there can be a strong down current which can be dangerous so, follow instructions is extremely important.

Komodo Island Day Tour
Hi my name is Becca and I am from Australia and I did a Komodo Island Day Tour and had such an amazing experience that Tis asked me to write for her blog and of course I said yes. So I will write about my experience with Maika Komodo Tour.
First of all I messaged Maika Komodo Tour about two months ago asking for what Komodo tours that they offered considering I only had a very short time in Labuan Bajo. She was very responsive on every message when I connected with her on WhatsApp and she answered all of our questions very promptly and was very helpful. She recommended we take a Komodo Island Day Tour considering we only had a short time.
We start our day at about 6:30am and were picked up at our hotel and had a Private Komodo Day trip. Overall, I can say it was absolutely amazing. We visited Komodo Island, Pink Beach, Manta Point, Taka Makassar, Padar Island, and Kanawa.
It is difficult to say which place was the best but I would say it was a tie between Padar Island, Komodo, and Manta Point. We made it to Padar and hiked up to the top and took some absolutely amazing photos. The hike to the top took about 45 minutes and the walkway was pretty easy. I was out of breath a few times, but overall it was not that bad. It was absolutely worth the time it took to make it to the top. There are four beautiful beach bays you can see from the top and it is absolutely breathtaking. Our guide said we were very lucky because there were not many people there at the time that he choose to come there. So that was a plus for having an experienced guide. We took so many photos.
We also went to Komodo Island and actually saw 7 Komodo dragons. Five of them were close to the beach and the other two were at a watering hole on the trail that we hiked on. We also saw a very small one on the beach. It was quite surreal to see an ancient creature right in front of our eyes. Such a unique experience. It was just incredible. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our questions we had. He used a big stick to keep the Komodo Dragon away from us at all times. We felt very safe and gave the guide a good tip for taking care of us.
My third favourite spot was Manta Point. Our guide helped us to do snorkeling with the current and took care of us. We saw four Manta Rays and got to swim around two of them. For me, I think this was a once in a lifetime experience. I will never forget it. It was like the Manta Rays just danced around us and were going up, down, and around us like they were entertaining us. My boyfriend was kind of freaking out because he couldn’t believe how close the Manta Rays would swim next to us. He was so glad he rented a go pro because he got some amazing photos and videos.
Pink Beach was also a very nice surprise. The sand was actually pink and the snorkeling was very cool. There are a bit of a current so we could swim along with it. The visibility was very clear and we saw so many small fish. I do not know their names of different kinds but they were all so colourful and swim all around us. We saw some very nice beautiful and colourful coral as well.
Taka Makassar and Kanawa were also very nice. Beautiful beaches and great to relax on. It was like being in the heaven of beaches and I already want to go back. Such a unique experience. Overall we had the perfect Komodo Day trip. I would not have changed anything. Our guide was great and very knowledgeable and Tis continued to help us with everything we needed. I would highly recommend Maika Komodo tour for anyone taking a Komodo Boat trip. Highly Recommend. Thank you for Tis and the entire crew that helped us have a vacation of a lifetime!

What is the difference between Komodo Tours and Flores Tours?
Komodo and Flores are actually different places. The town of Labuan Bajo is considered the gateway to Komodo National Park. Labuan Bajo is actually located on Flores Island. Flores is an island that is considered the mainland and Komodo National Park is composed of 29 different Islands and covers and area of about 1,733 square kms. Flores is to the east of Komodo and is one large island.
Flores is one of the Lesser Sunda Island, which is a group of islands located in the eastern half of Indonesia. The population is about 1,897,550 according to the 2021 census. The entire area of Flores and Komodo national park covers about 15,530 square kms. The largest and most popular towns in Flores are Maumere, Ende, and Labuan Bajo. Labuan Bajo is the main tourist area for the entire island. Tourists do visit all of the entire island, but much less than Labuan Bajo. The name “Flores” comes from the Portugueses word for “Flowers.”
Tourism in Flores.
Obviously Labuan Bajo is the most popular location that tourists visit because that is where tourists take boats to reach Komodo National Park. Besides visiting Komodo, there are also things to do in Labuan Bajo. In the resent last few years, many new hotels and restaurants have opened up. There are many more choices for western food then just a few years ago and also more options for much nicer hotels for the more luxury traveler. A few attractions that are less than an hour or two away are; Cucan Wulang waterfall, Cucan Wulang waterfall, Rangko Cave, Tado Spiderweb Rice Field and a few local beaches. When you travel further east, you can visit Wae Rebo Traditional Village, which is up high in the mountains. By going even further east you can visit towns such as Ruteng and Bajawa, which offers attractions such as Bena Traditional Village, Luba Traditional Village, Wolobobo Lookout, Cancar Spiderweb Rice Feld and more. Another popular attraction even further east and is Called Kelimutu Volcano lakes. Kelimutu is located about 1 hours Northeast of Ende. At the north is Maumere and further east is Luah and Werangdetoeng.
Komodo Island Tourism
Komodo National Park is very popular among tourists. The main 3 larger islands are called Komodo Island, Rinca Island, and Padar Island. You can find Komodo Dragons on Komodo Island and Rinca Island.
