A Magical 3-Day Adventure in Komodo: Diving, Dragons, and Manta Rays
I just got back from an unforgettable 3-day, 2-night Komodo scuba diving trip with Maika Komodo Tour & Diving, and I have to say, it exceeded every expectation I had. As an avid scuba diver, I’ve had my fair share of underwater adventures, but nothing quite compares to the beauty and variety I experienced on this trip. Here's a breakdown of my incredible journey, day by day.
Day 1: Finding My Fins and Sunset Night Dive
We started the adventure at Sebayur Kecil for a check dive (or snorkel, for the non-divers). It was the perfect way to ease into the day, with crystal-clear waters and colorful reef fish darting around us. Paul, our dive guide, made sure everyone felt comfortable and safe, while also sharing his vast knowledge of the marine life in the area.
Next up, we headed to Siaba Besar—also known as Turtle Point. And true to its name, we saw multiple sea turtles gracefully swimming among the corals. It was like a real-life aquarium! The dive was gentle but full of surprises as we floated alongside these peaceful creatures.
Afterward, we took a break at the stunning Taka Makassar sandbank. Surrounded by nothing but clear turquoise water, we relaxed on the sand, soaking up the sun and enjoying the moment before the day’s final adventure: a night dive at Padar.
I have only done a few night dives before, and I admit, I was a bit nervous. But the experience was pure magic. Underwater, everything changes; it felt like we were in a different world entirely. We saw bioluminescent creatures that lit up the night and a few curious reef sharks gliding in the dark. Ending the day with the night dive made it truly special.

We woke up early for a sunrise Padar Trekking, and let me tell you, the views from the top were jaw-dropping. Standing there, looking out at the iconic three beaches of Padar Island, I felt on top of the world. After a well-deserved breakfast prepared by Ryan, our fantastic onboard chef, we made our way to Komodo Island for the much-anticipated dragon trek.
The Komodo dragons did not disappoint. We were lucky enough to spot eight of these magnificent creatures lounging in the sun. Seeing them up close was both thrilling and humbling. They truly are like living dinosaurs.
Later in the day, we hit the famous Pink Beach for some relaxation and snorkeling. The pink hue of the sand was mesmerizing, and beneath the water, we discovered even more vibrant marine life. The coral reef here was breathtaking, and I spent hours just floating and exploring.
Our next stop was Mawan, the manta ray hotspot. I had heard so much about the mantas in Komodo, and let me tell you, it’s all true. During our dive here, I had the privilege of seeing five majestic manta rays gracefully gliding by. It felt surreal—these gentle giants of the sea are truly mesmerizing. Afterward, we had a sunset chill on the beach, processing the incredible encounters we’d just had.

On our final day, we set off for the famed dive spot, Batu Bolong. Known for its abundant marine life, this site was a diver’s dream. The water was teeming with life—schools of fish in every direction, vibrant corals, and even a few reef sharks cruising by. It was one of the most exhilarating dives of my life.
Then, it was on to Manta Point for another chance to see these magnificent creatures. This time, we opted to snorkel, and even from the surface, we were graced with the sight of mantas gliding through the water below us. Every time one of them passed, my heart skipped a beat. It’s a sight I’ll never forget.
Our final stop was Tatawa Besar, a coral garden that lived up to its name. The diversity and vibrancy of the corals were astonishing, with countless species of fish weaving in and out of the formations. It was the perfect way to end the underwater portion of our adventure.

The Crew and Food: Pure Perfection
Throughout the entire trip, the crew was incredible. They took care of everything—from setting up our dive gear to making sure we were well-fed and comfortable at all times. Paul was an amazing dive guide; his passion for the ocean was contagious, and his deep knowledge of the Komodo dive sites made every moment underwater that much more exciting. Ryan, our chef, prepared some of the best meals I’ve ever had on a boat—fresh, delicious, and always served with a smile.
