If you’re looking for an unforgettable dive adventure, Komodo National Park is a dream come true. I recently had the opportunity to join a daily diving trip with Maika Komodo Tour & Diving, and it was an experience that surpassed all expectations. Here’s a glimpse into our day exploring the wonders of the north side of the park, diving at Crystal Rock, The Cauldron, and Castle Rock.
The Day Begins: 7 AM Departure
The excitement was palpable as we set off around 7 AM from Labuan Bajo. The boat was spacious and comfortable, with well-maintained diving gear ready for us to use. It’s always reassuring when the equipment is in top condition, and Maika Komodo definitely delivered on that front. The boat itself was well taken care of, offering a smooth ride through the stunning blue waters of the park.
First Dive: Crystal Rock
Our first stop was Crystal Rock, known for its clear waters and vibrant marine life. As we descended into the crystal-clear depths, the underwater world unfolded before us in dazzling colors. Schools of fusiliers darted around, while we were lucky enough to spot a couple of white-tip reef sharks cruising nearby. The coral formations were stunning, and we even got to see a turtle gracefully gliding by.
Jamal, our dive instructor, was fantastic throughout the dive. He was not only professional and knowledgeable but also had a great sense of humor that made everyone feel at ease. His passion for the ocean was infectious, and he ensured we all had a safe and enjoyable dive.

Second Dive: The Cauldron
Next, we headed to The Cauldron, a thrilling dive site known for its strong currents and exciting drift dives. The adrenaline kicked in as we entered the "shotgun" drift, and it was a wild ride! We zipped along with the current, taking in the surreal landscape of underwater valleys and ridges. The diversity of marine life here is truly mind-blowing—giant trevallies, colorful anthias, and even a few barracudas made appearances. It was one of those dives that leaves you breathless (in a good way!).
A Delicious Lunch
After two fantastic dives, we surfaced and were treated to a delicious lunch on the boat. Ryan, the chef, outdid himself with a spread that hit the spot after all the excitement. The food was fresh, flavorful, and just what we needed to recharge for the rest of the day.

Final Dive: Castle Rock
Our final dive of the day took us to Castle Rock, one of the park’s most renowned dive sites. The conditions were perfect, with clear visibility and just the right amount of current. As we descended, we were greeted by schools of jacks and snappers, circling in mesmerizing patterns. Castle Rock is known for its larger pelagic species, and we were lucky enough to see a few grey reef sharks patrolling the area.
The coral gardens here were nothing short of spectacular, with vibrant hard and soft corals covering the seabed. It was a fitting end to a perfect day of diving.
Return to Labuan Bajo: 4:30 PM
By the time we returned to Labuan Bajo around 4:30 PM, we were all buzzing with excitement from the day’s adventures. Maika Komodo Tour & Diving really made this trip unforgettable. From the professionalism of the crew to the incredible dive sites, it was a day filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
The coral gardens here were nothing short of spectacular, with vibrant hard and soft corals covering the seabed. It was a fitting end to a perfect day of diving.
Return to Labuan Bajo: 4:30 PM
By the time we returned to Labuan Bajo around 4:30 PM, we were all buzzing with excitement from the day’s adventures. Maika Komodo Tour & Diving really made this trip unforgettable. From the professionalism of the crew to the incredible dive sites, it was a day filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Next Time: A 3-Day/2-Night Liveaboard Adventure
While this day trip was incredible, I’ve already decided that when I return to Komodo, I’ll be taking it to the next level with a 3-day/2-night Komodo liveaboard experience. This offers a completely different adventure, where I can dive at even more remote and pristine sites, experience sunrise and sunset dives, and truly immerse myself in the magic of Komodo’s underwater world. The liveaboard trip promises a deeper exploration of the park, and I can’t wait to see what else is waiting beneath the surface.
