Manta Point, Komodo National ParkVisiting Manta Point
If you are wanting to get the amazing opportunity to swim and snorkel with real Manta Rays than visiting Manta Point is a must do for you and your group. It is the perfect spot for viewing these beautiful underwater creatures whether you are snorkelling or scuba diving. Manta Point (which also known as Karang Makassar) is a truly rememberable place. It is located relatively west to the center of Komodo National park and is a large location where guests can get a chance swim with these amazing large sea creatures in their natural habitat. They are incredibly intelligent animals and as many people do not know, but they actually have quite large brain capacities relative to other animals. Probably the best thing about visiting Manta Point, is that visitors are almost always guaranteed to see at least one manta ray while they are there, and sometime our guests have seen up to 15 on one trip. It really depends on the season. Typically Dec-Feb, during rainy season, is the best time to see them. If you are lucky, you can’t to spend more than 30-45 minutes with them as they feed on Plankton and you can watch how they swim gracefully in the ocean right before your eyes. The entire area of Manta Point is relatively shallow, which makes is a great spot for snorkelling as well as scuba diving. As many of our guests tell us, for them to get a chance to swim this close to real Mantas, truly was a once in a lifetime experience for their family. If you our anyone you are with does have an underwater camera, we highly recommend it. As sometime these giant creatures will come right next to you and it makes for some fantastic videos and photos. There are many beautiful islands to visit on any of our Komodo Tour Packages, but as most of our guests agree, swimming with Manta Rays is one of the highlights in all of or tour itineraries. Getting to experience swimming with Manta Rays and diving with Manta Rays is an incredibly unique experience that not many people in the world get to do. They swim with a graceful presence and they even seem to enjoy giving a show for anyone watching under the water. Many of our guests ask if they can touch them and we want to make sure our guests know, this is not something you are allowed to do. The reason we can not touch them is because their bodies are actually covered by a mucus that is can be damaged or harmed if a human hand touches it. As well, many of our guests ask it they are dangerous. Not to worry, obviously they are big animals, but they are not dangerous.
Manta Point Komodo is located between the islands of Rinca and Komodo Island. While snorkelling in the water you may see areas of coral that the mantas will sometime swim behind. This allows them to stay in one places and feed on the plankton and not have to fight the light current that is sometimes there. The Ocean bottom floor has a topography that is relatively flat area but does have rolling mounds of sand that you can see from the top. This is because fisherman used to used dynamite to fish there and can still see the effects of that. Fortunately, it is now outlawed to use dynomite to fish in the National Park. As well, In 2014 Indonesia outlawed the fishing and the export Manta Ray in this area. As they could see it brought a lot of tourism to these special areas. If you would like to add Manta Point to any of our Komodo Tour Packages, just contact us and we can work to accommodate you.
