Rinca Island Rinca Island is great place to visit while in Komodo National Park. It is one of the three largest islands in the UNESCO recognised Park. The largest islands are; Rinca, Komodo Island, and Padar Island. If you are wanting to see real Komodo Dragons in their natural habitat, Rinca is a great option. Not only can you see Komodo dragons on this Island, but also great hiking trails as well as deer, monkeys, and water buffalo can be seen all over the island. The island occupies over 120 square miles of land which is mostly dense forest. There a few smaller beaches and even a small fishing village. For any visiting guests that choose any of the great hiking trails, they will get some great panoramic views from the top of the island.
Many people who have been to both Rinca and Komodo Island, prefer this island to see get a close up view of Komodo dragons. The Komodo Dragon is the largest lizard in the world and they are actually an indigenous species to this area of the world. Komodo dragons can reach up to 10 feet in Length and they can weigh more that 300 pounds. By looking at them, you can see they have scaly skin, flat heads, rounded snouts, and eat animals such as pig, deer, and even water buffalo. They rely heavy on their camouflage for hunting and are very patience creatures. Although when you see a dragon in person, they may look very lazy and not moving much, but these large creatures can actually move very fast and are can actually walk up to 7 miles a day.
Rinca Island Location
The Island is located West of the main land of Flores, and southeast of Komodo and Padar Islands. Our tour of Rinca starts by arriving on the dock at the small harbor. After that a short flat trek to the nature center. Keep and eyes looking when talking the short walk through the mangrove forest and a flat valley area, as you will probably see monkeys, deer, water buffalo, and yes maybe even a Komodo Dragon. After we arrive at the Nature Centre, we will have a brief intruction from one of the local nature guides. They can explain all about the Komodo Dragons, their habitat, and the trekking for the day. Each guide speaks good english, knowledgeable, and happy to answer and questions you may have about the island or local animals. After the briefing, the guests may be asked which trail they would like to hike on, as there are a few options to take. Typically the trekking takes between 1.5 - 2 hours, depending on the speed of the group. Some are easier and some are more difficult. On the hikes, the guides will explain more information about the habitat and hopefully you will see some wild dragons in their natural habitat. As well, on the trek, you will come to a the top of the local area which offer a beautiful 360 panorama of the island. Make sure your camera are on and take some wonderful photos. After that, the guests will head back down to the nature center where you and buy local arts, crafts, snacks, and drinks.
