Experince Diving Padar in Komodo national park. You can do many things in Komodo besides just a Komodo Island boat tour. Diving Padar is becoming more and more popular. Most of the dive sites around Padar Island are located on the east side of the Island. The small island area known as Padar Kecil East is where the most popular dive sites are located. Padar Kecil East is separated from the main island of Padar by a small and narrow channel that is still able to be navigated through. The side of Padar Kecil East can ofter have quite heavy ocean swells at different times, but for a majority of the year, the dive sites are good to dive at. This area includes large boulders, vertical walls, cracks, swim though, caverns, coral covered sea mounts, critter-crowded reefs and ledges.
If you go to the opposite side of Padar Kecil East, there are also wonderful dive sites that are more sheltered because they are located inside the bay. The conditions of the dive sites are easier for diving and are excellent for spotting small critters. The sites include Secret Garden and Pasir Putih,
As with all Komodo Dive sites, consideration to weather and seasonal changes should be observed before diving in the there locations. As well, these areas can be subject to seasonal monsoons, so it is usually better to dive between November and March. Considering Day to day conditions should alway be apart of choosing the correct dive sites in Komodo National Park.
Padar Diving sites are becoming more well known with Komodo Scuba diving companies and divers, but there is still alot to be discovered and explored in this area.
The main dive site around Padar are Pasir Putih, Secret Garden, Payung, The Three Sisters, and Pillarsteen.
Pasir Putih is located on the north side of Padar Kecil East. It is found in front of the sandy beach area. Here you may be able to spot Blue-spoted stingrays, nudibranchs, Cuttlefish, bobtail squid, Spanish dancers, pleurobranchs, ornate ghost pipefish and banded pipefish. The coral in Pasir Putih is not one of the main features to see but there is some around large boulders where you also see small critters as well.
Secret Garden is located in the bay of the north east part of Padar Island. This can be an excellent dive to spot small critters such as; spotting clubbing mantis shrimp, ribbon eels, and even octopus. Along the mini wall formation you can spot fusiliers, surgeonfish, and schooling snapper. If you look into the deeper water, you may be able to spot modular rays as well. As far as Coral, you can find this large green and orange black coral bushes. Payung is a small rock island with a long and squiggly shape. It is located at the south end of Padar eastern bay and located in-between Padar Island and North-West Rinca. Payung does not get as many divers at this site as many other dive sites in Komodo but you can still see many different kinds of aquatic life and coral. Diving Payung, you may see schooling sweetlips, nudibranchs fire urchins, sharks, and batfish. The Three Sisters are many seamounts that are located in open water and located about 300 meters from Padar Kecil East. From the top of the water you can not see where they are unless in low tide with stronger current you may see the water change in that area over the seamounts. Without a GPS or previous knowledge, The Three Sisters can be harder to find. The marine life is can be quite exceptional. You can see eagle rays, schooling surgeonfish, White tip shared, large groupers, lionfish, menacing frogfish, groups of humphead parrotfish, and a variety of nudibranch. There is also a wide range of different kinds of corals to see. Pillarsteen is located underneath the rocky cliffs on the south side of Padar Kecil East. Pillarsteen is a sight to see as it is made with big rocky outcrops with massive boulders, vertical walls, and canyons and caves. When diving this area, divers should be very area of the surges and swell that are coming in, as it can dramatically effect the dive. Here inbetween the rock and caves, you can see all kinds of aquatic life such as nudibranchs, angle fish, triggerfish, and in the deep you can spot White tip shark, humphead parrotfish, snapper, and sweetlips as well.
