Scuba Diving Castle Rock If you are in for a Scuba Diving treat, than Diving Crystal Rock in Komodo National Park is a necessity. Crystal Rock is located in the North Part of Komodo National Park about 300 meters from Castle Rock. This dive site offers so much for every dive that you can dive it many times and each time, it can feel like a completely different dive site. It is recommended for experienced dives only because it is subject to strong currents, which is one of the main reasons why it is such a great dive location.
During low tide, the tip of the pinnacle is visible from the surface of the water and usually the visibility is always great, which is why it is called Crystal Rock. To decide which area to jump in on will depend not the direction of the current and considering the current is usually stronger, divers quickly go down to about 25- 30 meters and that is where you can start to see some amazing aquatic life. It the current is very strong, it is recommended to grab ahold of a rock (not coral) or use a reef hook and hold on so you do not use too much energy and air consumption. At this location, you can basically find almost all of what Komodo offers in one area. From large predators to tiny little creature, if offers a wonderful combination of many things to see. Once you reach your max depth, open you eyes and enjoy the view. You can see a plethora of aquatic life including; Black tip, White tip, and grey reef sharks, barracudas, triggerfish, schools of hello-ribbon sweetlips, schools of tuna, butterflyfish, moray eels, fusiliers, napoleon wrasse, parrotfish, damselfish, grouper, crocodile fish, angel fish, parrot fish, anthers, pufferfish, eagle rays, and more. The rock walls also are home to many beautiful large fans, and colourful soft corals.
Crystal Rock is obviously named for its stunning visibility. It is typically best to dive this area between April and November. This is during the dry season and the ocean is typically more calm. Crystal Rock can be dove all year but it is better in the dry season but there we do have boats that go there much more ofter like Queenesia II Liveaboard. Usually divers are happy to dive in the central part of Komodo National Park because during rainy season is a great time to dive areas like Manta Point because you can usually see many more manta rays during this season. We usually start diving at about 23 meters where there is form of bridge connecting the pinnacle to the main rock. If there is not much current you can dive down from that to sea creatures around on the fan corals, such as small macro life like seahorses. Typically depending on current, next we go to the western side on the main rock and go up over to the eastern side. Considering this can be a strong current dive, it is always recommended to follow your dive guide’s instructions and follow them for safety.
