10 scuba diving mistakes to avoid in Komodo

  1. Skipping the dive briefing: One of the biggest mistakes divers can make is to skip the dive briefing. The dive briefing provides important information about the conditions you will encounter while diving in Komodo, the location of the dive site, and what you can expect to see underwater. By paying attention to the briefing, you can avoid misunderstandings, prepare for the dive properly, and ultimately have a safer and more enjoyable experience.  Our dive guides will do a briefing before every dive.

  2. Not checking equipment properly: Diving equipment can make the difference between a safe and comfortable dive and a dangerous one. Our professional dive guides go through ever piece of gear before they are even put on the boat, but as a certified diver, you should always have the habit of checking your gear to make sure it is working properly.  Before diving, it's essential to check that all equipment is in good condition, and that everything fits properly as well. Take time to inspect your mask, fins, regulator, and other gear to make sure everything is working correctly. If you're not sure how to check your equipment, ask your dive guide or instructor for help.

  3. Going too deep: Diving too deep can lead to a variety of issues, including decompression sickness, nitrogen narcosis, and oxygen toxicity. It's important to remember your training and stick to the planned dive depths. If you're new to diving or unsure about your depth limits, consider taking a refresher course or working with a dive instructor to improve your skills.  It can also have to have a dive computer.  If you assend to fast, many dive computers will make an emergency beep to let you know you are doing something wrong.

  4. Holding your breath: One of the most common mistakes divers make is holding their breath while diving. This can lead to serious injury or even death. To avoid this, always remember to breathe normally and continuously while diving. If you're feeling anxious or out of breath, take a few deep breaths and signal to your buddy or guide that you need a break.

  5. Touching marine life: Touching or disturbing marine life can harm both the creatures and the ecosystem. Some marine life can also be dangerous, such as venomous fish, so it's best to admire marine life from a safe distance. By respecting the marine life and environment, you can help preserve the underwater ecosystem for future generations.  Some fish my be posionous or by touching their skin you they can get infected from bacteria.

  6. Ignoring your air supply: You should alway check your gages when you are diving. Monitoring your air supply is crucial to ensuring a safe and enjoyable dive. Always check your gauge regularly and communicate with your dive buddy to ensure you have enough air to return to the surface safely. If you're running low on air or experience any other problems, signal to your buddy or guide and make a safe ascent.  If is also important to make sure you go over all the hand signals you may use during your dive briefing to make sure their is no confusion.

Proper buoyancy control allows you to move effortlessly through the water, conserve air, and avoid damaging the environment. If you struggle with buoyancy control, consider taking a buoyancy control course or practicing your skills in a controlled environment before diving in open water.  We offer an advanced scuba diving course in Komodo, and this can be a great way to learn and practice better techniques to buoyancy control.

8.   Not respecting dive limits: Diving within your training and experience limits is crucial for your safety and the safety of others. It's important to know your own limits and stick to them, even if other divers in your group are going deeper or staying longer. If you're not sure about your limits, talk to your dive guide or instructor for advice.  This is also a subject that should be covered during your dive briefing, just incase you may have any questions or confusion.

9.    Ignoring signs of trouble: Being aware of potential hazards and signs of trouble is essential for safe diving. If you notice changes in weather, strong currents, or equipment malfunctions, it's important to communicate with your dive buddy or guide and take appropriate action. Ignoring signs of trouble can lead to dangerous situations, so always err on the side of caution.  While scuba diving in Komodo, the current can change quite quickly.  This is why you should always listen to your experience dive guide and follow their instructions.

10.     Not diving with a reputable operator: Choosing a reputable dive operator with experienced guides and well-maintained equipment is essential for a safe and enjoyable diving experience. Research your dive operator before booking and read reviews from other divers to ensure that they have a good reputation. By working with a reputable dive operator, you can minimize the risk of something bad happening.  Maika Komodo Tour & Diving is a certified SSI dive center and all of our dive guides and instructors are properly trained and are constantly keeping their skill up to date.  We make sure all our gear is regulated properly and working as it should on each and every dive.
