Wae Rebo Village Tour -2 Days/ 1 Night (or longer if desired)
We highly recommend booking this tour. This is by far one of the best and most unique guided tours someone can do while visiting the Island of Flores. Our guided trips leave in the mornings from the town of Labuan Bajo to start the your exciting journey. We can pick you up at your hotel or meet at our office. It usually takes about 5-6 hours of driving to get to Denge village, which is on the southern coast line of Flores. Next we will take a short drive to the bottom of the mountain trail. Trekking up to the Local Village takes around 2-3 hours. This is a more difficult trek does require alot of up hill hiking though a forest trail. You will pass beautiful scenic views and even some small waterfalls. The trek covers an elevation up to about 1,250 Meters above sea level. Considering this trek up the to village can take up to three hours, it is only recommended for those that are comfortable doing this kind of exercise. After the 2-3 hours trek, you will arrive to the Local Village. After our arrival we will take part in a very unique welcoming ceremony with the chief of the Village. As all of our guests find, the locals are incredibly friendly and welcoming to all of their guests. You will be staying in one of the local huts with the locals and your tour guide. Local Dinner and breakfast is provided as well as coffee, tea, and water. After we get to the local village you will have some time to walk around the mountain top and take photos and sociliaze the locals and their children as well. If you are interested in Astophotography, Wae Rebo is a wonderful place to take photos of the stars at night, as their is not other light pollution. Typically we start hiking down the mountain around 9am in the morning. What to bring on your tour?
Considering it can actually be a little cool at night, we recommend bringing a Long sleeve shirt, Long pants, Rain Coat, shoes for Trekking, sun screen, insect repellant, Camera, Indonesian Rupiah for any extra purchases you my want to buy along the trip. As well, you want to make sure to remember any personal items you may need, and if you take medications, do not forget those. There are many things that make Wae Rebo Village unique. Such as the 7 (now 8) dome shaped wooden homes, which are called Mbaru Niang. This has been the standard traditional style of home for many years in the past, but know they are more unique as there are not many like this left. These Traditional houses typically have five levels and as you will find out in the welcoming ceremony, each level is designed for a certain purpose and has a story behind it. As the local chief will tell you, when you start at the top which is the fifth floor, this is to place of offering to the ancient ancestors of the family and villages. On the forth level of the traditional home is for storing different food which can be stocked up in case there may be a drought the following year. On the third level there are seeds to storing seeds for the harvest to be used in the following year. The second level is also for storing foods and goods. The living quarters for the entire family is on the bottom floor of the traditional home. On the bottom floor is where the guest will sleep on mats on the floor. Pillows and blankets are provided. If is highly recommended to bring a camera on this tour as it is incredibly unique and the locals are usually more than happy to take photos with our guests. |
