Frequently Asked Questions about Scuba Diving.

The following is general information for those that are new to diving and are curious about common asked questions.
Picture
  • What is scuba diving?
Scuba diving is a type of underwater diving that uses self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) to allow divers to breathe underwater.
  • How do I get certified to scuba dive?
To become certified to scuba dive, you will need to complete a scuba diving training course. These courses are offered by a variety of organizations, and typically include both classroom instruction and hands-on training in the water. Once you have completed the course, you will be required to pass a written exam and a skills assessment in order to be certified.

  • Is scuba diving safe?
Scuba diving can be safe if it is done properly and under the supervision of a trained professional. Divers should always follow safety guidelines and dive within their limits to minimize the risk of accidents.

  • What should I do if I experience difficulty while scuba diving?
If you experience difficulty while scuba diving, you should signal to your dive buddy or instructor and try to remain calm. Your dive buddy or instructor will be trained to assist you in the event of a problem, and they can help you to safely surface and address the issue.

  • How deep can I scuba dive?
The maximum depth that a scuba diver can safely dive to depends on a number of factors, including their training, experience, and the type of equipment they are using. Most recreational scuba divers are trained to dive to depths of up to 130 feet (40 meters), although some advanced divers may be able to safely dive to greater depths with the proper training and equipment.

  • What do I need to start scuba diving?
To start scuba diving, you will need to complete a basic scuba diving certification course. This will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to dive safely and enjoy the underwater world. In addition to the certification course, you will need scuba diving equipment, such as a mask, fins, snorkel, regulator, dive computer, and weights. You will also need to find a reputable dive shop or instructor to complete your training.

  • Can anyone learn to scuba dive?
In general, anyone who is in good health and comfortable in the water can learn to scuba dive. However, there are some medical conditions that may prevent you from diving, so it is important to consult a doctor before starting your training. In addition, children must be at least 10 years old to earn a basic scuba diving certification.

  • Can I scuba dive if I wear glasses?
Yes, you can still scuba dive if you wear glasses. However, you will need to make sure that your glasses are properly fitted with a mask strap or prescription dive mask in order to prevent them from falling off during your dive. It's also important to check that your glasses are not prone to fogging up, as this can impair your vision while diving. Additionally, you should always consult with your doctor before participating in any new physical activities, including scuba diving, to ensure that it is safe for you.

  • I’m not a strong swimmer, is this going to be a problem?
If you are not a strong swimmer, scuba diving can still be a safe and enjoyable activity for you, but it's important to take some extra precautions. Before your dive, make sure to let your dive instructor or guide know that you are not a strong swimmer, and they can provide you with additional support and guidance during your dive. It's also a good idea to take a scuba diving lesson or course to learn the basic skills and safety guidelines for scuba diving, and to practice these skills in a pool or shallow water before attempting a dive in open water. Additionally, you should always dive with a buddy who can assist you if needed, and make sure to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) or buoyancy control device (BCD) to help you stay afloat.

  • Do I need my own scuba gear to get certified?
No, you do not need to have your own scuba gear to get certified. Most scuba diving schools and dive shops will provide you with all of the necessary equipment for your training and certification dives, including a mask, fins, snorkel, regulator, BCD, wetsuit, and dive computer. This is especially useful if you are just starting out with scuba diving, as it allows you to try out different types of equipment and see what works best for you before making any purchases. However, once you are certified, you may want to consider purchasing your own scuba gear, as this will allow you to customize the fit and function of your equipment to your personal preferences, and can save you money in the long run.
