Scuba Diving Castle Rock Castle Rock in Komodo is among the favorites dive spots of many scuba divers who visit Komodo National Park. It is truly an iconic dive site in the north part of the National Park located just about 2 kilometres off of Gili Lawa. Depending on the seasons or tides, the current can be very strong and is sometimes only recommended for advanced scuba divers. Castle Rock dive site consists of several pinnacles that rise from a shelf that starts about 25 meters deep and climbs to the surface to about 4 to 5 meters. Depending on the tides and conditions , typically the dives start below the shelf about 30 metes and go up to the top of the pinnacles around 4 meters. Along the pinnacles, you can see all kinds of unique aquatic life, such as eagle rays, Manta, and sharks.
The dive offers changing currents that can offer so much to see on every dive. Typically it is better at the end or the beginning of slack low or high tide. At these times you can usually see more action of wildlife in the water. The visibility is usually very good and even in the deep blue you can see quite far away. At Castle Rock, if you get lucky, you can see predators in action hunting their prey all around the pinnacles. It is common to see large schools of fusilier, bannerfish, unicorn fish, and these can attract some of the bigger predators. Keep your eyes open for white tip and black tip Sharks, barracudas, and tunas looking for prey. You can also see many smaller creatures underneath the many table corals such as pigmy seahorse an blue-eyed crab. As well, you can spot fusiliers, surgeon fish, Trevallies, Spanish mackerels, and sometimes you may get lucky and spot some dolphins, spotted eagles rays, or manta rays.
Scuba Diving Castle Rock is best when sea conditions are more calm typically around April until October. Most experienced divers prefer to come between June and August. Typically during the rainy season November - March, the north part of Komodo can have bigger waves and stronger current so boats may not go to Castle Rock every day, if just depends on weather conditions. Typically in the Rainy season, scuba divers are happy to scuba dive the central part of Komodo National park because there is less current than the north or south and you can generally see Manta Rays. The center of the Park is more protected than the north part, which is where Castle Rock is located. At Maika Komodo Tour, we have many options for boats and liveaboards that go to Castle Rock. Our top Guest’s favorite is Queenesia II. Queenesia II Liveaboard is a Large Phinisi measuring 32 meters and is fully equipped for Scuba diving.
