Batu Bolong Dive Site ![]() Scuba Diving Komodo National Park is never a bad idea, but if you want the best experience. Batu Bolong may be your spot. On the surface, Batu Bolong just looks like a medium sized rock with a hole in it, but underneath the ocean lays a beautiful world that resembles a real life underwater aquarium. This famous dive location is located between Komodo Island and Tatawa Besar. It is by far one of the best dive spots in the entire area of the Komodo archipelago. This locations has been ranked top 10 dive spots in many dive magazines and articles divers even say it is one of the best dive locations in the entire world. Once you go underwater, you will soon see what all the talk is about.
This site does have some strong current, depending on the season, weather, and tide. This is one of the reasons it is loved by more experienced divers. The strong currents typically hit on one side of the rock and the other side is more safe for diving. Typically it is the south side of the rock that is protected from the current but often you can dive on the north side as well if the current is not too strong. The south side area provides enough of a protected shield agains the strong currents. The reef is still in great condition and offers every diver something different to see on every dive. As with every dive site in Komodo National Park, it is always recommended to follow your professional dive guide to get the best dive possible while still staying safe.
The top of Batu Bolong, right below the water, is a colorful reef full of hard corals, and as you go down the side of the rock as it slopes down, you find large sponges and a plethora of colorful fish that will blow your mind. The dive area is great all the way down to 30-35 meters deep. As following the guide you will, you most likely go back and forth on the large coral well, while also going slowly doing down. Once you get to the desired depth (25-30 meters) you will slowly come back up. Typically divers have to go back and forth on the wall because if you get too far to the left or right you could face strong down currents. Depending on the weather and season, these down currents can become very strong. It is always recommended to follow your dive guide.
While diving Batu Bolong, you will see an amazing mix of coral gardens and may see such aquatic wildlife such as; reef sharks, mantas, napoleon wrasse, giant trivially, dogtooth tuna, moray eel, barracudas, giant sweetlips, tuna, and possibly even an octopus, or a sea snake. If you look closely, you can see some great micro creatures as well such as; pygmy seahorses, tiny orangutan, nudibranchs crabs, and more. If you have an underwater camera, this is a perfect place to use it. You may want to have a red filter on it for the deeper areas. Another great thing about diving this spot, is it may seem like a different dive spot every time because there is so many different things to see and it seems impossible to see them all on one dive. As well school of fish are constantly coming and going so each dive you will see different things. |
