Manta rays are majestic creatures that can reach up to 7 meters in width and weigh as much as 2,300 kg. They have a distinct, triangular-shaped head, and their large pectoral fins resemble wings, giving them an almost ethereal appearance. They are gentle giants that feed mainly on plankton and small fish.
Diving with manta rays is a once in a lifetime experience, and it's essential to approach it with care and respect. These wild animals should be treated with the utmost caution and consideration. It's important to follow the guidelines of the dive operator and not to damage the coral reef or marine life. Moreover, it's crucial to be mindful of the environmental impact of diving and the rarity of these species.
Komodo offers an unparalleled opportunity to see manta rays in their natural habitat, and it's a must-see destination for any diver. The chance to witness these gentle giants gliding gracefully through the water is an experience that will stay with you forever.
Great tips Diving with Manta Rays

  1. - Plan your trip: In Komodo you can usually see Manta Rays all year, but most likely in the rainy season.  Sometime you can see up to 10 on one dive at Makassar reef, Mawan, or Manta Alley.
  2. - Get certified: You can see manta ray by snorkelling but if you would like to scuba dive with manta rays, you need to be a certified diver. If you are not yet certified, consider taking an Open Water Diver course.
  3. - Prepare for the dive: Make sure you have all the necessary gear and equipment, including a wetsuit, fins, mask, regulator, and BCD. It is also a great idea to have a dive computer. All these things should be prepared and maintained by the company you are diving with.
  4. - Always follow the guide's instructions: The dive guide will lead the dive and give instructions on how to safely interact with the manta rays. Follow their instructions at all times.
  5. - Be respectful: Remember that manta rays are wild animals, and it is important to respect their space and behavior. Do not touch or chase them, and keep a safe distance at all times.
  6. - Enjoy the dive: Mantas are gentle creatures and diving with them can be a truly unforgettable experience. Make sure to take plenty of pictures and videos to remember the experience.
  7. - Safety first: Always prioritize safety and follow the rules of diving. Never exceed your limits and dive within your comfort zone.  If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask your dive guide or dive instructor.
  8. - Be environmental friendly: Be aware of the environmental impact of diving, follow the guidelines of the dive operator and do not damage the coral reef or marine life.
