Luba Traditional Village
Being only a short distance from Bena, Luba Traditional Village is a great Locations to visit to still get the authentic experience but without all the tourists that Bena can sometimes have in the busy season. Luba Village is located 14km south of Bajawa. As with Bena, you will be asked for a small donation and to sign a guest book when you visit. Luba sits right at the foot for the massive volcano named Inerie.
As you enter the village you can clearly see Inerie behind the village (if it is not cloudy) and you can see the 14 homes and the nghadu pillars (representing the males) and bhagas (representing the females). As well as the metholithic rock structures. The Bhagas are small huts usually with a big window and they represent the female spirit. During many ceremonies the grandmother will be inside the bhaga while the family is outside and sometime they will partake in a the traditional drink. The nghadu’s are carved pillars with spears at the top, represent the male figures. These structures in the center are used for major ceremonies including house building and traditional new year. There are currently 5 bhaga’s and 5 nghadu’s, that represent the 5 clans of Luba village. The current village of Luba was built around 1860 (the date that the elderly of the village say) after the old village burnt down. Before the colonials came to Flores in the 16th century, the only two main crops that were grown around Luba was Rice and Uwi (a purple yam), but after the colonials came they started to grow more crops, including betel nut, clove, coconut, and coffee. Catholicism is the main religion that was brought by the colonials as well. Although the traditional beliefs of giving animal sacrifices to the ancestors is still commonly practiced during all ceremonies. The animal sacrifices include Bulls, pigs, and chickens.
All of the traditional homes have bull horns on the sides of the homes that represent the sacrifices that were made to the ancestor when the home were built or had a roof rebuilt. sometimes if would depend on the wealth of the family on how many bulls were sacrificed for the ceremony. Some of the homes have statures on top of the roofs which resemble the man and women. The statue with the figure standing tall with spears in his hand represents the male figure and the small replica of a home on top of the roof represents the mother of the family as she provides shelter for the family and stays close to the home.
The statues on top of the homes represent the husband and wife. The husband is standing tall with sometimes having spears in his hand to represent hunting, leadership, and decision making. The wife is resembled by a home, showing that the mother stays close to the home and takes care of the family and gives the shelter. The traditional house in the center are referred to as Sa’o Saka pu’u, which symbolises the ancestral house of the women and the Sa’o saka lobo, the ancestral house that represents the ancestors of men.
