Komodo Island Facts
Picture
The following Information are some facts that you may find out on your Komodo Island Tour.

-When Visiting Komodo Island or Rinca Island, guest are asked to stay in groups and use a professional park Ranger.  The Park Ranger will accompany the group on the tour.  Park Rangers even suggest to the women that are menstruating to tell the Park  Ranger, because Komodo Dragons are very sensitive to the smell of blood in their surroundings

-Up to 5,965 Komodo dragons can be found in Komodo National Park, which covers three major islands, namely Komodo, Rinca and Padar. Komodo Island has at least 2,918 dragons, while the rest are scattered across Rinca Island (2,875), Gili Motang Island (92), Nusa Kuda Island (75) and Padar Island (five).

-Padar Island which is nearby Komodo is becoming one of the most photographed island in the entire park due to its recent popularity from travellers taking so many photos and sharing this online.  Padar is a beautiful Island to hike to the top of and it a great addition to any Komodo Island Tour.

- One of the most famous beaches in Komodo National Park is Pink Beach.  This Beach is actually on Komodo Island and it is recommended not to hike too far from the beach because you may run into a Komodo Dragon.

- Visitors to the island should do everything they can to not get too close to a dragon because they could get bitten.  Komodo’s have a poisonous saliva that contains very deadly bacteria.  They will bite their prey follow them until the poison takes effect.

- Komodo Dragons eat meat, so they are classified as Cannibals.  It is always recommended to stay close to your Park Ranger and follow all the instructions that they give you.

- If I Komodo Dragon feels threatened, they can make a sudden attack.  They make look slow when you see them, but they can move extremely quickly when they need to.   Rangers advise to stay quiet if you are approached by an angry Komodo.  Do not move and do not panic.  There is no way you can outrun a dragon as they can be very fast and move quickly.  Just follow all the rules the Park  Ranger gives you.

- To lessen the danger of hunters, for example, snakes or hogs going after the eggs, female Komodo winged serpents burrow a few extra openings close to their genuine home trying to cover it. These openings are excessively comparative such that even the mother Komodo can get confounded in perceiving the genuine one.

- The moms brood their eggs for a long time and afterward leave the home, possibly to return nine months some other time when the eggs are going to bring forth. Curiously, it is said that female Komodos just consideration about their eggs, not the adolescents.

 - When brought forth, infant Komodos climb trees to keep away from hunters and make due by eating reptiles, little snakes and remaining in the trees until they arrive at 3 to 5 years old.

- In addition to tourists, the park is also a popular destination for scientists and naturalists who want to study the animal's evolution, as Komodo dragons only exist in Indonesia. East Nusa Tenggara has the last population of the large lizards, which lived across Indonesia and Australia millions of years ago.
- Park rangers don’t feed the dragons; they let them hunt animals such as goats and birds, just like in the wild.
- Komodos live a solitary life. They don’t gather in groups and they prefer to hunt alone.
- Being a cold-blooded animal, the dragons climb hills at the park to sunbathe in the morning, and then go back to shady areas to cool down.
- Komodos can get stressed when there are too many people around. Rangers will immediately warn visitors to stay away when this happens.
- The animals usually mate between June and July when females have reached the age of eight and males are seven. In September, females can lay up to 15-30 eggs after taking over nests made by brush turkeys and deepening the holes by two meters. Around 70-80 nests can be found on Rinca Island.
-  To reduce the risk of predators such as snakes or boars preying on the eggs, female Komodo dragons dig several additional holes near their real nest in an attempt to camouflage it. These holes are so similar that even the mother Komodo can get confused in recognizing the real one.
- The mothers incubate their eggs for three months and then leave the nest, only to return nine months later when the eggs are about to hatch. Interestingly, it is said that female Komodos only care about their eggs, not the juveniles.
10. Once hatched, newborn Komodos climb trees to avoid predators and survive by eating lizards, small snakes and staying in the trees until they reach 3 to 5 years of age.
