The History of Komodo Island and the Discovery of the Dragons

Local people told stories about giant “land crocodiles” for centuries, but no Westerner arrived until the early 1900s.
In the 1910s, Dutch sailors reported seeing enormous lizards up to seven meters long. They even believed the dragons could breathe fire and fly, because their encounters were so shocking.

After hearing these stories, Lieutenant Steyn van Hensbroek, an official stationed in Flores, organized an expedition to investigate. His team killed one dragon to study it, which was later documented by Peter A. Ouwens, Director of the Zoological Museum in Bogor.
Ouwens published his findings in 1912 and officially classified the Komodo dragon as a species of monitor lizard, not a mythological creature. He recognized the species was endangered, and the Dutch government established protection regulations by 1915.

Other researchers, including Emmett Reid Dunn, F.J. Defoisse, and W. Douglas Burden, continued research in 1926, collecting additional specimens for museums. Since then, scientists from around the world have visited the park to learn more about the dragons’ behavior, biology, and habitat.
