If you are looking at booking a tour of to see the Komodo Dragon, Maika Komodo Tours can offer you many options from 1 day trips to 4 day live aboard trips.  See a real life Komodo Dragon is truly a once in a lifetime thing for many people and is highly recommended.  The Komodo Dragon takes its name from the island.  The dragons are located on Komodo Island and some of the smaller surrounding Island as well.  There are also other large animals on Komodo Island that do not get mentioned as much, like the water buffalo, cockatoo, civets, banded pigs, and macaques.

When talking about the history of the Island, the earliest stories of the dragon were known to be talked about widely and it did attract a lot of attention.   Although no Westerner actually visited the Island until around 1910s, in which the Dutch made it to the Island.  The sailors that visited the island reported the large lizards measured up to almost 7 meters and they believe that the mouths could actually breath fire.  They told stories that they were burnt by the dragons and could not continue the research they were trying to do.  They also believed the Komodo Dragons could fly as well.   After hearing all these reports, Lieutenant Steyn van Hensbroek, who was an official of the Dutch Colonial Administration located in Flores, decided to plan a trip to the Island and see for himself.   After hearing all of these crazy stories, he put together a team of soldiers before going to the island.   Once there, him and the soldiers managed to kill one of these massive creatures so they could truly investigate.  The one they killed was about 7 feet long.   As well, these event was documented by the Director of the Zoological Museum in Bogor, Javer.  His name we Peter A. Ouwens.  As far as known, these were the first actual reliable information and documentation about the details on these mysterious creatures.   There were many studies and samples taken by Peter A. Ouwens.  He recruited more hunters and ended up killing two other dragons that were about 3.35 meters and 3.1 meters in Length.  They also captures two baby dragons as well.   Once they did research and observations, he realised that there giant lizards were not flame throwers, bu actually a type of monitor lizard.  The results of all of his research were published in 1912.  During his research we realised the lizards were an endangered species, so the Dutch government issued a regulation for the protection of these giant and obviously unique creatures.  The endangered species protections was added in 1915 for Komodo Island.
