Information on Komodo Dragons.

Visiting Komodo Island on with a Komodo Tour package is a great way to see all that the National Park has to offer.  You can choose between Komodo Speed Boat trips or a multi day liveaboard trip.
Komodo dragons are the largest living species of lizard, native to the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. These lizards can grow up to an average length of 2-3 meters (6.5-10 feet) and can weigh up to approximately 70 kilograms (150 pounds).
Komodo dragons are carnivorous and have been known to hunt and eat large mammals, such as deer and pigs. They are also opportunistic scavengers and will eat carrion if available. The Komodo dragon has a unique hunting technique where they bite their prey and then follow it until it becomes weak from blood loss and infection.

In addition to their impressive size and hunting abilities, Komodo dragons are also known for their powerful tails and sharp claws. They are agile climbers and swimmers, and have been known to attack humans on rare occasions.
Despite their fearsome reputation, Komodo dragons are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, due in part to habitat destruction and illegal poaching. Conservation efforts have been put in place to protect these lizards and their habitats, including the establishment of the Komodo National Park in 1980.
Komodo dragons have a life span of around 30 years in the wild. They are solitary animals, except during the mating season when males will compete for females. Female Komodo dragons lay a clutch of around 20 eggs, which they bury and guard until they hatch around 8-9 months later.
Komodo dragons are part of the monitor lizard family, which also includes the Nile monitor and the water monitor. These lizards are closely related to snakes and are thought to have evolved from a common ancestor around 40-50 million years ago.

Despite their fearsome reputation and impressive hunting abilities, Komodo dragons are also known for their intelligence. They have been observed using tools, such as sticks, to help them break open eggs, and have been known to work together in groups to hunt prey.
Overall, the Komodo dragon is a fascinating and unique animal. Despite their reputation as fierce predators, they are also intelligent and have an important role in the ecosystems of their native Indonesian islands.

DIFFERENT options for komodo Tours

Komodo Tour Options

For anyone visiting Komodo National Park, there are a few different options to enjoy what the National Park has to offer.   First of all, in order to get to the park, you come by way of boat from Labuan Bajo.  Most people fly to Labaun Bajo airport from Bali or Jakarta.  Labuan Bajo is also known as the "Gateway to Komodo" because it only take about one to two hours to reach the park, depending on the boat speed.  Depending on how long you want to stay in the National Park and what you would like to see, is what will decide which option you choose.  You can choose a Komodo Day Trip on a local wooden boat or a speed boat.  With the speed boat you will get to see more places because as the name says, they are faster than the local wooden boats.  A standard Komodo speed boat tour will take you to six different locations.   If you choose to private charter, it will allow you to be more flexible on where you want to go and what you would like to do.  As far as the local wooden boats, typically they only visit four locations because the boats are slower than the speed boats.

Another popular options is a Komodo Liveaboard trip.  They usually range from 2 day/1 night to 4 days/3 nights.  You can even find longer trips such as Queenesia II Liveaboard which generally goes out for 6 Days/5 Nights.  The Most common of these is a Komodo Liveaboard 3 days/2 nights.  This is a good amount of time to see many of the highlights that the National park has to offer.  You can also choose to go scuba diving Komodo.  Most dive companies offer 3 dives per day and some offer a leisure/diving combination if you don't want to dive that many times.  It all depends on what you are looking for and what you would like to do while you there.

As far as trekking, the most popular places are Padar Island, Kelor, Gila Lawa, Rinca Island, and Komodo Island.  Of these the most difficult would be Padar Island and Gili lawa.  Komodo Island can be more difficult as well, if you choose the long trek, but most eveyone chooses the medium or short trek.  You are almost always guaranteed to see Komodo Dragons on all of the trekking options.   As far as beaches, the most populars beaches are Pink Beach Komodo, Long Beach, Taka Makkasar, & Kanawa Island.  Obviously there are many beautiful beaches all over the National park, but those are just the most visited and famous ones.

Why choose a Liveaboard over a Komodo day trip?  Well, that completely depends on what you would like to do, but by taking a longer liveaboard like Queenesia II for example.  That give you much more time to experience all that Komodo Has to offer.  You can take more time to see Komodo Dragons, you can take more time on top of Padar Island.  You can take more time to relax on the beaches of Pink Beach or Kanawa Island.  It also allows for you to get away from the city life or away from many people, and more many of the visitors and can be a great time to decompress from the normal things that stress people out.  So basically, you get more time to relax.   If you are a scuba diver, that is a great reason to take a liveaboard trip.  That way you have more time to visit the north as well, and dive locations such as Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, and more.  The favourites among divers are usually Batu Bolong and Castle Rock. You can also get up to Gila Lawa and do a sunset hike.

It is preffered to have a good Komodo tour guide that knows the area and can answer all of your questions you may have.  It is very hard to find Komodo tours from Bali, but much easer to find all the trips that go out of Labuan Bajo.

If you have any questions on Komodo tours, please contact Maika Komodo tour, and our experinced staff would be happy to help you book the perfect getaway for you and your group!.

Day 6:
Siaba Kecil (Diving)
Mawan (Diving)  Very common to see Mantas here.
Return Labuan Bajo harbor

(Above is our standard 6 day/ 5 night itinerary.  Locations are subject to change depending on weather and tide changes.)

Below is a description of many of the dive sites listed above.

CASTLE ROCK
Dive site location in the north of Komodo National Park.  Divers can see Fusiiers, Schools of Barracudas, Trevallies, Oriental Sweet Lips, Surgeon Mackerels, and sharks.

MANTA POINT
Dive Site located in the center of the National park.  Divers can see Eagles Rays, Clown Triggerfish, and usually many Manta Rays.  This is a famous dive location because Manta gather in this particular area at cleaning stations.  Current is usually light and makes for a nice light drift dive.  Depending on tide changes, the current can become strong as well.

BATU BOLONG
Batu Bolong is located in the center of the National Park.  Batu Bolong mean “hole in the rock” in local language.  It can be seen from the surface as a big rock with a large hole in it, creating an arch that is viewable from the surface. Underneath the water is a plethora of aquatic life and many of our guests say it is like viewing an underwater aquarium.  Divers can see many different fish including; Giant Trevallies, Rainbow Runners, Napoleons Wrasses, Sharks, and many different kinds of corals.  The currents at Batu Bolong can become strong on each side of the rock, so it is highly recommended to always follow your dive guide.

CRYSTAL ROCK
Crystal Rock is located in the North part of the National Park, and can offer great visibility in the deeper blue.  Divers can sometime see larger fish such as Tuna, Mackerel, Ribbon Sweet lips, Moray Eels, Scorpion fish, Basslets, Hias fish, sharks, eagle rays, manta rays, and more.
